Frequent School Closures Under Microscope, April 2026
April 1, 2026
Between snowcrete, elections, and 3-hour early releases, some Mantua parents have felt that there hasn’t been a full week of school since Thanksgiving. The FCPS School Board has taken notice of those complaints. The current FCPS school calendar spans 44 weeks, of which only 25 are full weeks, before accounting for snap elections, late arrival/early closures for weather, or snow days.
Hunter Mill School Board member Melanie Meren recently posted to Facebook that “In the 2025-26 school year alone, partial weeks occurred more than half the time, functioning as an informal “childcare tax” that falls hardest on our hourly-wage and most vulnerable households. Ultimately, the lack of continuity of instruction and schedule is detrimental to students’ learning.”
Mount Vernon School Board member Mateo Dunne recently posted his analysis of the school calendar, where he found that the school calendar has lengthened over time at the expense of summer vacation. Dunne found that, “From 2006 to 2013, the school year averaged 286 days, but since 2022, FCPS has averaged 298 days. This year is the longest school year on record–303 days. As the school year has lengthened, the number of summer days has shrunk from an average of 78 days in 2006-2013 to an average of 66 days since 2022. The upcoming summer is the shortest on record–62 days.”
For Mantua residents who have speculated that the current system is anomalous, Dunne’s survey supports that premise. Two decades ago, almost three-quarters of all school weeks were scheduled for five-days of instruction. Now, though, “this year is the lowest percentage of five-day weeks on record—52%. I believe at least 80% of school weeks should consist of five-day weeks in order to ensure a consistent routine and promote academic achievement.” Again, this is before counting weather-related delays.
Parents hoping for relief may have to wait years for change, though. At-large board member Kyle McDaniel has pointed out that the School Board has previously prioritized a framework that gives at least a two-year calendar lead time to parents and teachers, stating “we need to stick with a calendar that gives parents and families plenty of lead time for planning; in my view, this means a two-year rolling calendar…. I would not support changes to 26-27 or 27-28 calendar at this time. If the Superintendent were to bring changes to the 28-29 calendar later this year, I would be very open to prioritizing more 5 day weeks and working with the community to achieve that goal.”
