Traffic and Infrastructure Updates, October 2025
October 1, 2025
A speed-tracking sign was installed on Prosperity Avenue and Southwick Street by FCPD last week for traffic
coming from Route 236, following a fatal crash near there earlier this year. The officer in charge of the sign
reports that speeding above 45 mph along Prosperity, which has a 30 mph speed limit, was mostly concentrated
at night. In the first week of tracking, one vehicle was recorded going above 60 mph.
We have attempted for two years to get VDOT and FCDOT to implement measures to slow traffic at that
dangerous intersection. We’ll continue to work on getting a speed feedback sign for traffic coming from the
other direction and a permanent solution.
Notably, the sign is not a camera. Speed cameras are prohibited in all but a few cases in Fairfax County (but
not in Fairfax City). Mantua’s state delegate Holly Seibold introduced a bill in the 2025 General Assembly to
reform how counties can use speed cameras, but it did not pass.
